From the Vikings to the Wonder of the World

Schlei. If you prefer to watch history documentaries on TV rather than the eternal thrillers or meaningless talk shows with self-appointed experts, you can also go on a live search for traces of the past during your holiday. The Schlei-Baltic Sea region, where visitors often encounter traces of the Vikings, is very suitable for such a holiday. They lived in Northern Europe and in the Schlei-Baltic Sea region between the 8th and 11th centuries. One of the most important settlements and trading centres was the former harbour town of Haithabu. The Schlei was once the hub for trade between the North Sea and the Baltic. In the course of time, Haithabu was repeatedly attacked by enemies and lost importance as a trading centre. In 1066, the Slavs burned Haithabu to the ground. Another settlement, about three kilometres away, became the new home of the Vikings: Schleswig. To this day, you can still see the semicircular rampart in Haithabu, which was part of the fortifications there and was intended to protect the village. Probably the most valuable cultural centre of Viking history is the Viking Museum Haithabu with its varied world of experience around the original Viking houses, as well as the medieval, formerly Danish fortification Danewerk (Danish: Danevirke).

Another cultural jewel awaits tourists at the entrance to Schleswig: Gottorf Castle, which houses two of Schleswig-Holstein's state museums. The extensive grounds also feature a baroque garden, in the centre of which shines the reconstructed Gottorf Globe, which was one of the great wonders of the world in the 17th century. But: Impressive historical traces can be discovered not only at the entrance to the town, but also in the town centre. St. Peter's Cathedral with the Brüggemann Altar towers 112 metres above the ground in Schleswig's old town. This part of Schleswig is also characterised by the former fishing village of Holm, which invites you to take a stroll. The immediate location on the Schlei also makes it possible to take beautiful walks directly on the water - whether in the Königswiesen city park or along the Schleipromenade, from which sailing ships or the excursion steamer, the "Wappen von Schleswig", can often be observed in the summer months.

Where "The Country Doctor" practices. The idyllic harbour town of Kappeln on the Schlei and Baltic Sea is a state-recognised health resort, known among other things for the ZDF series "The Country Doctor" as the film location "Deekelsen". Nestling in a gently rolling landscape directly on the Schlei, close to the Baltic Sea, Kappeln is located in a holiday region that offers ideal conditions for a wide variety of activities on land and water. With its sights, charming harbour and attractive pedestrian zone, Kappeln invites you to linger. Excursions only round off the whole holiday. For example, Kappeln's surroundings offer long walks through the Geltinger Birk nature reserve with its wild horses and the Charlotte Mill. Also worth seeing is the fishing village of Maasholm on a small peninsula between the Baltic Sea and the Schlei. Another highlight in the region is the imposing moated castle in Glücksburg.

Here is an excerpt with other worthwhile destinations in the region.
