Wine is not everything, but without wine everything is nothing

For wine connoisseurs or those who want to become one, a holiday in the Ortenau is a must: you will be thrilled by the variety, quality and exclusivity of the wines grown there. Where the wine paradise lies: between Gernsbach in the Murgtal in the north and Gengenbach in the front Kinzigtal in the south. No other wine-growing region in Germany is as highly decorated in awards at national and international level as the Ortenau in Baden-Württemberg. In addition, the climate and quality of life there are comparable to conditions in Tuscany. The sun shines more often than in other regions, which brings excellent wines and is expressed by a cuisine to match.

Vineyards terraced for centuries. A diverse and unique cultural landscape between the banks of the Rhine and the vineyards awaits the visitor. Picturesque winegrowing villages nestle on the hills and in the valleys of the foothills. The vineyards between the Rhine plain and the heights of the Black Forest are characterised by the steepest sites in Baden and by vineyards that have been terraced for centuries. The vineyards south of the Kinzig valley up to the Bleiche near Ettenheim are still in the Ortenau region, but already belong to the Breisgau wine region. Around 50 wineries, winegrowers' cooperatives and wine cellars have joined forces in the "Ortenau Wine Paradise" to cultivate the image and quality of Ortenau wines at a high level.

Ortenau is the home of Riesling, but it is also Burgundy country. As the king of white wines, the Riesling - or Klingelberger as it is called in Ortenau - enjoys world renown. This racy, elegant wine with fruity acidity and a very fine bouquet has been at home here for 225 years. But the Ortenau is also Burgundy country. The Spätburgunder red wines are the "aristocrats among red wines." These wines are full-bodied, powerful and have a slight blackberry tinge. Have you ever enjoyed a Clevner? The hearty and full-bodied Spätburgunder Weißherbst (rosé) blends in harmoniously. Grauer Burgunder (Pinot Gris) is the fruity, elegant version of Rulander. Weißer Burgunder is a harmonious, elegant wine with a discreet bouquet. The full-bodied Clevner or Traminer combines balanced alcohol content and low acidity levels with a very fine bouquet with a wild rose scent. The same variety as the Clevner is the Gewürztraminer, a spicy, bouquet-rich wine often rich in nuances in its flavour and with a distinct varietal character. Müller-Thurgau, a cross between Riesling and Gutedel grapevine, impresses with its fruity freshness and delicate muscat tone.

But the Ortenau is much more than wine and good cuisine; in many places it offers the typical Black Forest postcard images: broad sunny valleys such as the Acher, Kinzig, Rench or Schutter valleys, which stretch many kilometres into the Black Forest, low-pitched hipped roofs on the Black Forest farms, women in Bollenhut costumes. The low mountain range, the towns and the Rhine plain make the Ortenau a true sports, leisure and recreation paradise. The Europa Park Rust is a crowd puller known far beyond the state's borders, but the Mümmelsee lake or the Allerheiligen waterfalls are also worth a visit. This picturesque hiking area with the largest natural waterfalls and medieval monastery ruins can be found in Oppenau, at about 530 metres above sea level. If you are drawn to larger cities, it is only a stone's throw across the Rhine to Strasbourg and Baden-Baden is also just around the corner.

A gem in the Harmersbach Valley. Another tip: our little town of Zell am Harmersbach lies in a beautiful Black Forest valley. If you make the detour from the Kinzig Valley into the 16-kilometre-long Harmersbach Valley, you will be thrilled by the extensive valley landscape with its orchard meadows, fields and many Black Forest farms. Above the valley rises the Brandenkopf, at 945 metres the highest peak in the central Black Forest. From its tower, the diversity of the natural and cultural landscape is particularly impressive. The small town of Zell with its 8,000 inhabitants lies right at the beginning of the Harmersbach Valley. Medieval half-timbered houses and Art Nouveau facades, picturesque nooks and alleys, small shops and inns are what make Zell so appealing. The five art and local history museums and the "Zell Kultur" cultural programme round off the holiday. Zell is an ideal holiday destination for excursionists, hikers and cyclists. The half-timbered towns of Gengenbach and Haslach are close by, and the picturesque surroundings are only a stone's throw away.

If you are travelling to the Ortenau with your family or a larger group, you are sure to find the right accommodation among the many holiday homes on offer, so that you can organise your holiday according to your personal rhythm.
