Pure relaxation between forest and sea

When tourists drive into Dangast along Lindenallee, with old farmhouses and fields to the right and left, they sense the special atmosphere of the small North Sea resort and artists' village directly on the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. Dangast is situated on a ridge of land and offers an "unobstructed" view of the water and the Jade Bay or the Wadden Sea, depending on the tide. The mild, stimulating climate invites you to take relaxing walks, swim and laze in a beach chair or go on an exciting mudflat hike. And in the town of Varel, only a few kilometres away, the sea with its lively harbour awaits the holidaymaker on one side, the forest on the other and a cosy town centre in the middle.

Varel in the southwest and Wilhelmshaven in the northwest are the most important towns on the shores of the Jade Bay, the 190-square-kilometre bay in Lower Saxony. And another little orientation aid: Friesland lies to the left of the Jade Bay and Wesermarsch to the right. The best way to get to know the bay is to take a trip on the "Etta von Dangast". From the harbour in Dangast, the Etta sails out into the North Sea almost daily. Excursions to the Jade Bay, to the seal banks or to Wilhelmshaven are offered. The trip to the Arngast lighthouse is particularly well known. The small passenger ship has room for around 145 guests and offers a unique view of the North Sea. The Arngast lighthouse is located in the middle of the Jade Bay, is 36.9 metres high and stands on a sandbank. It was built in 1910 to guide visitors to Wilhelmshaven and for orientation in the Jade Bay. In addition, the lighthouse also serves as an orientation point in the fairways to Varel and Dangast. The lighthouse is still in operation today.

Beautiful, but demanding. From Dangast, the lighthouse can be reached either by boat or on foot during a mudflat hike. The lighthouse cannot be visited inside, it is operated from land. A mudflat hike to the lighthouse is beautiful but demanding, taking a total of six to seven hours. Together with National Park guide Gerke Enno Ennen, we set off from Dangast - and here the first challenge already awaits: due to the lack of current, the mudflats directly on the coast are particularly deep, muddy and difficult to ford. Along the way, there are frequent breaks for rest and relaxation, during which Gerke Enno Ennen passes on exciting information about the Wadden Sea habitat. Arriving at the Arngast lighthouse, there is a longer break where the silence and vastness of the North Sea can be enjoyed to the full. You can then return to Dangast either on foot or on the "Etta von Dangast" bathing ship.

While we're on the subject of activities: The region around the Jade Bay on the North Sea offers its holidaymakers not only unique natural landscapes, parks and gardens, but also many opportunities for sports and leisure. There are also a number of sights and leisure parks for families both in the district of Friesland and in the Wesermarsch. The Jade Info House with its boat mooring is an absolute must for sports enthusiasts. Here you can get information about hiking trails, cycle paths, canoe tours and more. Holidaymakers can moor their canoes and smaller boats at the jetty. Or they can go on a canoe trip from the Jade Info House. An offer for cyclists: a beautiful 50-kilometre day tour around the Jade Bay starts in Wilhelmshaven and heads south almost always along the dyke via Dangast, Norderschweiburg and Sehestedt to Eckwarderhörne. From there, pedalers can take the ferry back to Wilhelmshaven. The only catch: the ferry does not run daily.

Two tips for hikers: In Nordenham, our solar system can be explored over a distance of six kilometres. This is possible because the planetary path shows the distances on a scale of 1: 1,000,000,000 (one in a billion). If you start in Nordenham, you can choose to take the short route, but this will only take you as far as Saturn, while the long route also allows you to get to know Pluto. The second recommendation is the Sehestedt salt marsh adventure trail, combined with the salt marshes on the Jadebusen: from the dyke rise at the Swimming Moor, the five-kilometre circular trail leads through the salt marshes to the Wadden Sea and back via the Sehestedt lido. Information boards provide information about the natural history of the Jade Bay, the importance of the salt marshes as a breeding and resting area, and the special adaptation of plants and animals to the extreme conditions of the North Sea. Incidentally, the floating marsh in Sehestedt is the world's only outer dyke marsh and was originally located inland. Over the years and due to the construction of the sea dykes, the Jade Bay flooded the marshland that separated the Floating Bog from the sea. This created a unique habitat. Holidaymakers should take the opportunity to visit the Floating Moor soon, because the ten-hectare area will not exist for long. Because every flood wears away another piece.

Pure harbour feeling, city life and maritime attractions. Finally, a little city information: Wilhelmshaven means pure harbour feeling, city life and maritime attractions - a beach holiday on the North Sea and life in an up-and-coming port city merge to create a special holiday experience. Wilhelmshaven's south beach with its hotel and restaurant offers is a popular attraction for Wilhelmshaven residents and guests. Whether they come to the beach to swim or relax or stroll along the promenade, they feel at home. The sunbathing and leisure areas are ideal for a visit to the beach with activities such as sports and games. The leisure facilities along the Maritime Mile on the south beach and around the Great Harbour include the city's museum attractions. These are the Wilhelmshaven Aquarium, the German Naval Museum, the Unesco World Heritage Wadden Sea Visitor Centre and the Wilhelmshaven Coastal Museum. The south beach and the Bontekai are connected by the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge, built in 1907 and completely renovated in 2011/2012 - the landmark of the city of Wilhelmshaven.

The North Sea resort of Dangast is located directly on the Jadebusen. The wonderfully fine sandy beach is accessible without a fence or entrance fee. Colourful beach chairs dominate the picture on the beach. Here you can enjoy a wonderful holiday in a beach chair and build sandcastles. The play ship at the "Wattbuttjer" playground is a great adventure for the little ones. The evening on the beach can be rounded off with a café on the Beach Club sun deck, from where the view of the North Sea is magnificent. The high sky and the special light over the Wadden Sea already inspired the painters of the "Brücke" around Franz Radziwill more than 100 years ago. Here they and other artists, even today, found the inspiration for their works of art. The meeting place for the artists was then as now the Kurhaus Dangast. A special highlight is the open-air theatre "Das Geisterschiff" (The Ghost Ship), which is performed in a great atmosphere directly on the Dangast sea dike and tells of the adventures of a Dutch captain.

So that everyone can arrange their holiday according to their own personal rhythm, a nice holiday flat is recommended, which should be booked for a few nights if possible. After all, the stay should be enjoyed in peace and should not degenerate into stress.
